Abstract
One hundred twenty five patients with palpable breast mass were finally diagnosed with incisional biopsy
at the Department of Surgery, College of Medicine, Hanyang University from July 1985 to September 19 36. Among 125 patients, the fine needle aspiration biopsy was done for 42 patients. The results of the fine needle aspiration cytology were compared with postincisional histologic diagnosis. ¢¥ The results of this study were as follows:
1) The incidence of breast carcinoma in 125 incisional biopsies was 24%.
2) Among 42 aspirates, 5 had a technically unsatisfactory aspiration cystology. The incidence of unastisfactory group in 42 aspirates was 11.9%. 3) The cytologic diagnosis were malignant in 7 cases, suspicious for malignancy in 5 cases, benign in
25 cases and unsatifactory in 5 cases.
4) The aspiration cytology detected cancer with a overall accuracy of 91.9%, false positive fraction of 8.3%, false negative fraction of 8%, sensitivity of 91.7%, specificity of 92% and positive value of 91.73b.We could conclude the fine needle aspiration biopsy was considered to be the initial diatgnostic method with a high degree of accuracy in the diagnosis of palpable breast masses.
